BFA Senior Exhibition

Exploring the strength of femininity, my art demonstrates that women are not the docile, mute, and passive beings that our society wishes and trains us to be. As I look to feminist protests throughout the history of the United States, I am shown the power women hold to make real change. My goal when I create new pieces is to aid in this change and add to the on-going pursuit of gender equality.

This series aims to create a shift in our perspectives on how we should view misogynistic ideologies, and then act to dismantle them. Oil paint allows me the freedom to create astringent visuals with striking colors and dimensional textures. Color and composition play a large role in my process to direct the attention of my audience towards the conversation I am creating; challenging societal norms and traditional roles regarding women and femininity.

With a confrontational and abrasive style, my figures stare at the viewer causing an abrupt and unavoidable connection. The gruesome and dominating subject matter is used to cause a visceral reaction so that any viewer has the ability to acknowledge the severity of our lived experiences as women. The foundation of my work as a whole is to empower women, to acknowledge and remind them of their strength.

Perhaps this series was to remind myself as well.
